Why preparedness matters
Earthquakes compress decisions into seconds.
Earthquakes can begin without a useful countdown. Inside a home, the immediate danger is not limited to structural damage: unsecured furniture can overturn, glass can break, lighting and other objects can fall, and panic can make movement through a shaking building more dangerous.
Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) treats earthquake safety as something that starts before the shaking: secure heavy furniture, know the safer places in the room, keep essential supplies ready, make a family emergency plan and practise Drop–Cover–Hold On in advance.
