Furniture-integrated protective technology

Everyday furniture.A protected space when seconds matter.

A modular safety capsule integrated into a familiar bed—designed to preserve the character of a normal interior while creating a reinforced internal space for high-risk environments.

Why preparedness matters

Earthquakes compress decisions into seconds.

Earthquakes can begin without a useful countdown. Inside a home, the immediate danger is not limited to structural damage: unsecured furniture can overturn, glass can break, lighting and other objects can fall, and panic can make movement through a shaking building more dangerous.

Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) treats earthquake safety as something that starts before the shaking: secure heavy furniture, know the safer places in the room, keep essential supplies ready, make a family emergency plan and practise Drop–Cover–Hold On in advance.

If shaking has already started

Do not run for the exit during the shaking.

AFAD advises people who are already indoors not to run toward stairs or exits while the building is shaking. Move away from windows, glass and unsecured cabinets; get low, protect the head and neck, and hold on. If available, take cover under a sturdy table or use substantial furniture that can provide a protected position, and remain there until the shaking stops.

This is the practical problem Safety Capsule is designed around: instead of depending on reaching a separate shelter, the project places a dedicated protective space inside a piece of everyday furniture that is already close at hand.

Why Safety Capsule exists

The idea began with a question shaped by Türkiye’s earthquake reality.

The Safety Capsule idea took shape in 2020 after conversations with people in Türkiye, where earthquake risk is part of everyday reality. The starting question was simple: could protection at home become more accessible, more natural and easier to live with every day?

The idea was not to place a bunker in the bedroom. It was to combine two roles in one familiar object: an ordinary bed for everyday life and an integrated protective space for an emergency. From the beginning, the design goal was to remain calm, comfortable and visually familiar while keeping a place of protection and essential supplies close to the person.

Protection should fit into everyday life—not force everyday life to look like an emergency.

The concept

Protection that belongs in everyday life.

Conventional emergency shelters often require dedicated space, specialist installation or a visibly defensive structure. Safety Capsule takes a different approach: the protective space becomes part of furniture people already use.

The structural capsule and the external furniture design are conceived as separate layers. This allows the same protective principle to support different bed sizes, finishes and interior styles without turning a bedroom into a permanent visual reminder of risk.

Testing status

A credible proof of concept—with the next step clearly defined.

During preliminary testing, the prototype was subjected to a concentrated load using an approximately 5,000 kg concrete block. The capsule maintained a protected internal space during the demonstration, indicating its potential as a protective system.
